A futuristic show capsule allows the company to clearly demonstrate examples of its electromobility solutions. An efficient battery solution provides the power and a high-voltage heater regulates the temperature in the interior. Webasto is using the vehicle roof as a large innovation area. Thanks to integrated solar cells, the battery and the heater are also capable of harvesting the power of the sun. Integrated switchable glazing provides pleasant shading to protect against the sun and create a cozy atmosphere in the vehicle’s interior. At the touch of a button, the glass cover darkens or becomes transparent again.

Individualized battery

Customised and "build-to-print" battery solutions for passenger cars and commercial vehicles: Webasto's modular design approach makes it possible. Webasto has successfully established itself in the electromobility market and in battery production in particular. In the new plant in Dangjin, Korea, the first Webasto-owned passenger car batteries have been produced since April 2022. With a cycle time of approx. 3 minutes, two battery variants, a basic version and a long range variant, are rolling off the production line there for the Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation: In addition, Webasto has developed the HEV battery with Chinese car manufacturers as a customisable battery system for hybrid vehicles.

Ambient light

High-tech integrated into the glass creates spectacular lighting effects at night, while still offering a clear view of the sky during the day. Suitable light influences the mood of passengers. Modern lighting elements, therefore, are indispensable in vehicles and have long been an essential part of creating a high-quality ambience. Webasto exploits the power of light and integrates it into the glass of its panoramic roofs. Invisible prints on the glass can be utilized to create a wide variety of patterns and color scenarios that are only visible when activated. There are no limits to the possibilities. Individual, modern lighting scenarios turn the panoramic roof into a unique ambience element.

Switchable glazing

High-tech glass makes it possible: shade and privacy at the touch of a button. A clear view of the sky, pleasant shading for sun protection or more privacy: Webasto is the expert for switchable glazing in panoramic roofs. At the touch of a button, the glass cover either darkens or becomes transparent again. This function is enabled by innovative film technologies that are integrated into the glass. Electric control signals change the way in which these films transmit light. The advanced technology and design allow individual freedom. For example, the shading can be activated for specific individual roof elements.

Webasto is a pioneer in the solar area - and now ready for the future. For electric and hybrid vehicles, solar energy is a smart solution because it charges the battery, and solar power can be used directly for electric driving. Today's efficient solar cells produce significantly more electricity, which can charge the traction battery via intelligent battery management. As a result, the alternator is relieved, and fuel consumption is reduced. The carbon dioxide savings potential of solar roofs is also impressive. A gasoline engine emits an average of 3.8 g/km less carbon dioxide while a diesel vehicle around 2.65 g/km when a solar roof is on board for battery charging. This means that the solar roof is currently considered one of the most efficient eco-innovations on the market.

With 10 kW of power and over 95 % efficiency, the HVH 100 ensures constant comfortable temperatures in battery-electric cars. The HVH 100 high-voltage heater is the only 800-volt heating element in series production worldwide. Its innovative layer heating technology is superior to other heating concepts.

The complex layer system converts electric current into heat almost loss-free and quickly. Another advantage is the low space requirement: the heating element is 0.6 mm thin and only 200 cm2 in size. Unlike other technologies, no rare earths are used.

Solution for automated driving

The Webasto Roof Sensor Module (RSM) integrates a fixed lidar fully functionally and elegantly into the roof line. The module facilitates automated driving and safety functions. The elevated position of the lidar is optimized for performance and ensures reliable monitoring of the vehicle’s surroundings. The compact roofline module can be integrated into automakers’ production lines in combination with panoramic roofs, thereby simplifying the stages of production. In terms of sensor availability, Webasto is cooperating closely with the cleaning systems specialist dlhBowles, among others, on this roof system.

Next gen convertible roof system in the bmw 4 series

BMW 4 series convertible

Webasto has been manufacturing convertible roofs for more than 35 years. Opening a Webasto convertible system means pure joy and driving fun. The elegant roof of the BMW 4 Series is a great example: it is the first four-seater convertible with panel bow roof and tonneau cover. In terms of design, lightweight construction and acoustic comfort, Webasto combines the best features from the world of convertible roofs. By using innovative materials and sophisticated kinematics, Webasto transfers the elegant look of a coupé over to a convertible top with a textile appearance. The convertible specialist is also a pioneer in hardtops, softtops and lightweight construction solutions with in-depth kinematic know-how.
