Stockdorf/Hengersberg. – 19 July 2013 – Webasto celebrated its topping out ceremony yesterday for the new administration and development building in Hengersberg. In an effort to make the development of convertible roofs even more efficient, the automotive supplier will be moving into a new building very close to the existing site. As a result, Development, Prototype Construction and Testing will be brought together under one roof. “In Hengersberg one of the most modern development centers for convertible roofs is emerging. With it we are laying the foundation to continue to be the world’s most productive supplier of convertible roofs,” explains Dr. Holger Engelmann, Chairman of the Management Board of Webasto SE.
Those who took part in the official celebrations in Hengersberg include the Minister of State, Martin Zeil; Head of District Authority, Christian Bernreiter; Mayor Christian Mayer as well as members of the owning families and Franz-Josef Kortüm, a member of the Supervisory Board of Webasto SE. And it wouldn’t have been a Bavarian topping up ceremony without the craftsmen as well as the employees of Webasto-Edscha who are going to move into the new building.
“Webasto stands for an international success story from Bavaria. The topping up ceremony in Hengersberg showcases the strong innovative power of the Bavarian automotive parts industry and is an important signal for our business location. Only with investments in research and development can we strengthen our competitiveness. And in doing so, the medium-sized business is the backbone and motor of our economy. The fact that Bavaria is so exceptionally positioned is a fact we owe to successful companies like Webasto,” states the Bavarian Minster for Economic Affairs, Martin Zeil.
Webasto stands its ground in a difficult market environment
With a market share of almost 50 %, Webasto is the global market leader for convertible roofs. At the moment, though, the global market for these is stagnating. “We believe in the convertible even if the market is currently under pressure. Our aim is to be profitable even with lower quantities, and we will achieve this with innovative ideas in Development and Production. For this reason, we are investing around € 20 million here in Hengersberg and are building a competence center for convertible roofs,” says Dr. Engelmann.
Webasto-Edscha: Everything under one roof
Webasto-Edscha headquarters in Hengersberg is being expanded to include a new building which will accommodate the entire administrative and development areas of the Webasto business unit on an area of 14,000 square meters. Around 350 employees are slated to move into the new building upon construction completion at the end of 2013. “The proximity of Production, Administration and Development is a tremendous boost in efficiency for our location when it comes, for instance, to launching products even faster,” says Dr. Engelmann.
Broad product portfolio for convertible roofs
Even in the future Webasto will continue to offer automotive manufacturers the most extensive product portfolio for convertible roof systems. Be it for soft tops or retractable hardtops or for exclusive small scale series or for volume models from the initial concept right up to the completed convertible roof, each product is the result of extensive years of development expertise. Over the last 27 years, Webasto-Edscha has developed over 50 different roof systems. Some of the most important current trends in the convertible roof segment are lightweight construction as well as design trends in color and surface design. Almost all of the well-known automotive manufacturers are customers of Webasto-Edscha.
